Dates of the training: e-learning lecture on the 28th of January, 2021 + practical session 16-20 May 2022
Place: Bosön’s National Sport Complex , 181 47 Lidingö, Sweden
Theme: Exercise testing
Exercise testing is a valuable tool in the assessment of athletes’ performance capacity and the prescription of exercise/training. There are several different modes and modalities available for exercise testing that can provide information to the trainer/coach regarding athletes’ health and training status. Data collected during testing is all essential and can facilitate the design of training. In addition, exercise testing results can serve as an excellent way to track progress and monitor performance improvements.
The above mentioned topics will be addressed during the module. Participants will spend most of their time in Exercise Physiology Laboratory, Top Sport Centre located at Bosön’s National Sport Complex where through hands-on workshops will be taught and thereafter run by themselves a series of tests for monitoring sport performance. Module’s lectures will provide the theoretical background for conducting well designed and valid exercise tests while seminars and tutorials will guide participants in the interpretation of test results as well as the implementation of results in the design of training. Last but not least the conference meeting that will be held during the module will allow the exchange of experiences and the further comprehension of the significance of exercising testing.
Content of the module:
The module includes basic test methodology with focus on sport-specific tests for monitoring performance. The most important tests for the evaluation of aerobic and anaerobic capacity will be presented and analysed highlighting both their differences and similarities. Furthermore, the process of selecting the appropriate tests in different occasions and its important parts such as objectivity, ethical considerations and experimental design will be addressed during the module. Data collection and data interpretation through an objective approach as well as data presentation are also included in the module. Special focus will be given in the implementation of test results in training planning and periodization in both strength and endurance sports.
Learning outcomes:
- discuss objectivity in testing and explain test results
- evaluate and apply basic physical testing methods based on standardization, ethical aspects, reliability and validity
- choose with a critical approach the appropriate test method in different occasions and implement the test results in training planning
Teaching structure:
The above mentioned learning outcomes will be reached with the use of lectures, video lecturing,
hands-on laboratory workshops, seminars, group assignments and group presentations in the
appropriately equipped sports-friendly environment of Bosön, Swedish National Sports Centre. Video
lecturing and in general the use of digital means such as the digital platform during the module is
going to be used for the purposes of “flipped classroom” which will be the main teaching method
applied during the module. Peer learning will be also used as a teaching – pedagogical method
during the module and its objectives will be reached with the use of group assignments and Cases.
Our goal is to maximize module’s pedagogical benefits, given the short duration of the module, by
implementing interactive teaching with the use of advanced and easy-to-use technology.
Examination :
Trainees will be examined both orally and in written. The oral examination will be conducted in the form of a seminar where students in groups will present the results of their tests. The written examination will be conducted in the form of a written assignment related to the content of the module. Both types of examination will be assessed in a two-grade scale: Approved or Fail.
- Oral examination in groups during a CASE seminar
- Written assignment in groups
- Individual written assignment
